Key Statement:

We will discuss successes and challenges experienced in a multi-site research study focused on combining e-learning and virtual simulation on student knowledge and attitudes.

Keywords:

Multi-site Research, E-Learning, Virtual Simulation

Abstract:

Many things should be considered when planning a study that requires collaboration across organizations and systems. This paper will share lessons learned as we completed a funded multi-site study focused on the combination of e-learning and virtual simulation on knowledge and attitudes of nursing students toward person-centered dementia care. The use of multi-site research allows for collaboration between researchers with expertise in various areas of nursing. However, the journey can be complex and requires careful planning and resources to be successful.

Learning Outcomes:

1.  Identify key factors contributing to successful collaboration in multi-site research studies

2.  Demonstrate the ability to assess and address challenges commonly encountered in multi-site research studies,

3.  Understand the benefits and limitations of multi-site research, enabling them to make informed decisions and optimize outcomes in their own collaborative research initiatives.

We will discuss successes and challenges experienced in a multi-site research study focused on combining e-learning and virtual simulation on student knowledge and attitudes.

TRANSCRIPT:

Our poster is titled “Lessons Learned from a Multi-Site Research Study.” I am Dr. Cindy Johnson and my colleague is Dr. Katie Morales. We conducted a multi-site study which required collaboration across organizations and systems within the University System of Georgia. We added rigor by maximizing the resources from each site. We took advantage of our current network to include a clinical nurse specialist content expert. We discuss critical components when working with four co-PIs and the resulting implications for promotion and tenure. The multi-site setting provided a richer diversity of students but also presented challenges when working with the different institution’s grant and IRB offices.
We will discuss the benefits and challenges we encountered procedurally, with the virtual simulation, and with the e-learning module during designing and implementation. We provide references and our contact information. We would like to acknowledge the National League for Nursing and the Edmund J Pajarillo research award which funded the study. We believe the multi-site design was favorable when applying for this grant.
Thank you!
